Samsung on Thursday 14 January unveiled it’s new Galaxy S21 series of smartphones – the Galaxy S21, S21 Plus and S21 Ultra – at the Galaxy Unpacked event. The South African devices will be powered by the Exynos 2100 chipset.

“Made for the way we live now, Galaxy S21 is loaded with state-of-the-art innovations so you can make the most of every moment”.

Samsung Mobile South Africa

Justin Hume, Director of Integrated Mobility at Samsung South Africa explained that we’re “living in a mobile-first world”, especially in a world where working remotely is now the norm.

Seeing as most South Africans are spending more time at home, Samsung “wanted to deliver a smartphone experience that meets the rigorous multimedia demands of our continuously changing routines”.

The new Galaxy series is unlike anything you’ve ever seen before. Here’s what you need to know.

Galaxy S21 and S21 Plus

Samsung’s new S21 flagship series features an epic pro-grade camera, regardless of your photographic skills. It’s a device truly built for individual expression, and it all fits within a 6.2-inch (S21) or 6.7-inch (S21+) display.

In addition, the edge-to-edge Dynamic AMOLED 2X Infinity-O display has an adaptive 120Hz refresh rate for smoother scrolling and viewing. Thanks to the Eye Comfort Shield, you’re eyes are in for a treat too.

As for video, the S21 series boasts 8K Snap which “lets you grab crystal clear images from your 8K video footage, so you can capture all the live-action and get standout still shots every time you hit record”

The camera is quite impressive, too. Samsung’s new triple-lens cluster on the rear features ultra-wide sensor, a main sensor and one telephoto lens. I’ll go into more detail for my review of the Galaxy S21.

Pre-orders for the Galaxy S21 and Galaxy S21+ are open from 14 to 28 January to secure your device. Pricing for the Galaxy S21 starts at R17 999 and Galaxy S21+ starts at R21 499, with eligible trade-in value up to R10 000.

The S21 will be available in Phantom Violet, Phantom Gray, Phantom White and Phantom Pink while the S21 Plus will be available in Phantom Silver, Phantom Black and Phantom Violet.

Galaxy S21 Ultra

The Galaxy S21 Ultra features a  6.8-inch 3200 x 1440 OLED display with refresh rates up to 120Hz, coupled with a powerful 5 000mAh battery, as well as 12GB of RAM, and up to 512GB of storage.

It also has a quad-camera setup on the rear, featuring an ultra-wide camera, a 108 MP main camera (yes, really, 108 MP) and two 10 MP telephoto cameras with differing lengths of optical zoom.

It’s also the first Samsung phone which is compatible with the S Pen stylus, with stylus support previously being included for the Galaxy Note and Samsung tablets

The S21 Ultra will be available in South Africa from 29 January – in Phantom Silver and Phantom Black with a price tag of R27 999.
