A newly-surfaced Oppo patent is making headlines. It’s rumoured that this flagship phone could be the upcoming Oppo Find X3 Pro, and is being described in reports as the “most stylish smartphone of all time”.

Patent details

Back in 2019, Guangdong Oppo Mobile Telecommunications filed a design patent with the China National Intellectual Property Office (CNIPA) for a unique yet groundbreaking smartphone.

CNIPA approved the patent and published it earlier this month (October 2020). The seven-page patent document, which can be viewed here, shows four different models in the series, each of the designs with a different curvature.

The first model features a screen that extends further than we’re used to on a smartphone. Another sketch showed a screen that had been described by Let’s Go Digital as a super-curved screen.

While the phone looks futuristic, Let’s Go Digital explains that implementing such a curvey screen would be easier than manufacturing Oppo’s 3D waterfall display design. A patent for the latter was filed back in 2019.

The new patent for the curved designs shows a fairly narrow phone, with reportedly a 21:9 Cinema ratio. It also features a thin bezel along the top, and possibly also incorporates an under-screen selfie sensor.

The device has a minimal look, with a completely re-designed rear panel. The camera is situated vertically in the top left corner and protrudes slightly from the housing.

Let’s Go Digital believes it may house a triple-camera setup with a 10x Hybrid Zoom lens, similar to that in the Oppo Find X2 Pro. Manufacturers usually place additional buttons along the side of the device, but not Oppo.

Buttons and ports

Oppo’s upcoming patents show that some of the function buttons will be placed on the rear. They are situated along the edge and appear longer than usual, which would make it easier to reach regardless of how you hold the device.

They are also out of sight while you use the phone, adding to the device’s sleek and stylish appearance. The power button will be situated along the top edge of the device.

Lastly, you’d find the USB-C port, the SIM compartment and a speaker along the bottom edge of the device. Oppo released images of a prototype with curved display back in 2019 July so we might see one on the shelves soon.

Oppo phone availability

Experts believe the first image in the patent of the yet unknown phone could be a high-end device in the Find series, specifically the Oppo Find X3. The phone with the extreme-curved display could be the Find X3 Pro.

That is unfortunately all we know about the Oppo Find X3 at this stage. The Find X2 and X2 Pro devices were released back in April 2020. Rumour has it that the next addition to the Find family could be introduced in April 2021.
