The African Biathlon, the new running revolution taking South Africa by storm.

South Africa’s running scene is getting a major upgrade with the launch of the African Biathlon—a sport that blends fitness, culture, and social connection. Spearheaded by the Nedbank Running Club, South Africa’s largest running movement, this initiative is designed to get more people moving while making running more exciting and accessible.

What is the African Biathlon?

Forget traditional biathlons that involve skiing and shooting—activities that don’t suit Mzansi’s sunny climate. Instead, the African Biathlon features two simple but thrilling elements:

A 5km Run – Open to runners of all fitness levels.

A Post-Run Experience – The fun part! Whether it’s coffee with friends, local art tours, wine tastings, or even a party, runners get to choose how they celebrate their workout.

This innovative approach ensures that every African Biathlon reflects the unique passions of its participants.

Why SA needs the African Biathlon

Running isn’t just about fitness—it’s about community. Research shows that 77% of local runners wish they had active running communities nearby. The African Biathlon is answering that call by blending fitness with social engagement.

“We’ve set out to create a new kind of running movement,” says Edward Mothibi, Comrades Marathon champion and Nedbank Running Club member. “The African Biathlon isn’t just about fitness—it’s a cultural celebration. It’s about running, connecting, and having fun together.”

Where and when can you join?

The African Biathlon officially kicks off in Johannesburg from February to March 2025. Key community running crews like Benchwarmers Running Club, Social Running Club, and Vault Running Club will help drive this movement, ensuring that every event is community-led and packed with energy.

Each event will pair the 5km run with vibrant post-run experiences, creating a welcoming space for everyone—whether you’re a seasoned runner or a complete beginner.

Runners won’t just participate in the African Biathlon—they’ll shape it. Through community voting, participants will help decide the post-run activities, making this movement a true reflection of South Africa’s diversity, creativity, and culture.

“Nedbank is committed to helping our customers save time while banking, allowing them to spend their time on things that matter most, with the people that matter most.” says Khensani Nobanda, Nedbank Group Executive for Marketing and Corporate Affairs. “The African Biathlon is more than a fitness initiative; it’s a celebration of community and culture. For those starting the year with fitness goals. This is a fresh and exciting way to stay motivated while having fun.”

Don’t miss out on the revolution reshaping running in South Africa! Get involved, cast your vote for the ultimate post-run experience, and be part of a game-changing fitness movement.
