Lloyd Harris, SA’s last Australian Open hope, crashes out the tournament

South Africa’s last remaining player in the Australian Open draw, Lloyd Harris, crashed out of the tournament on Saturday.

Lloyd Harris disappointingly lost in straight sets to American wildcard Mackenzie McDonald who is ranked a lowly 192nd in the world.

Harris, now the 80th-ranked player in the ATP rankings, lost 7-6 (9/7), 6-1, 6-4 in a match which lasted a minute over two hours.

Despite the third round loss, it was the furthest 23-year-old Harris has progressed in a Grand Slam to date.

Lloyd Harris’ compatriot Kevin Anderson lost in the first round to Italian ninth-seed Matteo Berrettini.

Meanwhile, South African doubles ace Raven Klaasen missed the year’s opening Grand Slam due to Covid-19.
