The decision to host the 2022 World Cup in Qatar generated criticism from media commentators but Fifa are set to go ahead with the tournament.

This will be Qatar’s first appearance at the Fifa World Cup having never earned a place on the global stage through the Asian Confderations pathways.

Germany sealed their place at the World Cup on 11 October 2021 when they hammered North Macedonia 4-0 to secure top spot in Uefa’s Group J and claim the first of 13 European berths.

North Macedonia had upset Germany in Duisburg back in March in the only blemish on their campaign which started under Joachim Löw but will be completed under the guidance of Hansi Flick.

The day after Germany became the first team to earn their spot at the World Cup, Denmark joined them as the second European Group winners.

The Danes remarkable rise has been consistently linked to the collapse of star midfielder Christian Eriksen during the Euros. Without him, Denmark reached the semi-finals before also dominating Group F of the UEFA World Cup qualifiers.

Joakim Mæhle’s goal against Austria sealed their place in Qatar.

Belgium’s 3-1 win over Estonia on Saturday 13 November 2021 ensured they became the fifth team to qualify for the quadrennial showpiece.

Les Diables rouges went unbeaten for seven matches with their 1-1 draw with the Czech Republic in March.

Despite some patchy form, an 8-0 win over Kazakhstan in the penultimate round of qualifying matches was enough for France to clinch the group ahead of Finland, who advance to the playoffs.
