Will Monnapule Saleng play for Orlando Pirates in Soweto Derby?

Orlando Pirates are set to take on Kaizer Chiefs in the Soweto Derby this weekend but will they be able to call upon key player Monnapule Saleng?

Orlando Pirates are set to take on Kaizer Chiefs in the first instalment of the Soweto Derby this season.

Pirates will arguably come into this game as favourites judging on form, but Chiefs now also have momentum.

Chiefs will also be boosted by some new signings, which could be used to catch Pirates out on the day. The Buccaneers on the other hand might reach the day without a new signing. They could, however, be ready to welcome back a very useful derby weapon in winger Monnapule Saleng on the day.

Saleng in and out of training

Previously a key player, Saleng has not even been at training on more than a few occasions this season. This has led to speculation over his off-field behaviour or a possible fall out with coach Jose Riveiro. Being a Pirates fan darling, the supporters have become divided on their opinion on the situation. Others want clarity on the situation before placing judgement. Others have already concluded that the rumours of a high salary demand are true and are labelling him greedy. While some are siding with the player saying that he should be backed more by Riveiro and the club management.

Saleng was left out of more than five games late last year, and was not training during that period. He made an impressive return to action against Al Ahly and played a few more games after. Then out of nowhere, he was dropped completely. There have been pictures of him visibly upset on the grandstand while his teammates celebrated a goal by the club. He was left out of two games for Pirates, a loss to Cape Town City and a win against C.R Belouizdad. He also didn’t train with the club ahead of the game against the Red Devils in Cairo. Furthermore, he was left out of the Nedbank Cup tie against Richard’s Bay FC, despite training in the week. That has since raised more questions about his Pirates future.

With Soweto Derby against Chiefs this weekend, an update on Saleng’s availability has been given.

Will he play for Pirates in the Soweto Derby vs Chiefs?

“He (Saleng) is a Pirates player and like any player who is fit and ready he will always be available for selection. He will be back with the team soon to continue from where he left off with his contribution,” said a source to Soccer-Laduma

The publication then goes on to cast doubt that Saleng will play for Pirates in the Soweto Derby against Chiefs.

Not looking good for Buccaneers?

“Although Saleng’s possible return might not necessarily be in the Soweto derby this weekend according to sources, indications are that there is progress in his situation for him to get back into the team and compete for a place in the starting line-ups again.” Wrote the publication.

Pirates fans, how big a blow would it be if Saleng was not selected for the Soweto Derby against Chiefs? Feel free to leave your thoughts and feelings in the comments below!
