Carlos Alberto Parreira was appointed as the coach for Bafana Bafana ahead of the 2010 FIFA World Cup, which was hosted in South Africa.

His leadership saw the team failing to progress to the next round, making them the first host nation to be eliminated in the group stages of a World Cup.

Before joining Bafana Bafana, Parreira had previously coached Brazil twice, winning the 1994 World Cup and the 2004 Copa America. He holds the record for attending the most FIFA World Cup final tournaments as a manager, with six appearances.

Carlos Alberto Parreira initially resigned before making a comeback

In 2007, he was appointed as the Bafana Bafana coach. However, he resigned in April 2008 to return to Brazil to be with his family and ill wife, leaving the national team in disarray. He mentioned, “We worked very hard in these 15 months, but suddenly there were problems.”

He called his close friend Joel Santana to take over, but after poor results, Santana left, and Carlos Alberto Parreira returned in October 2009. During the 2010 World Cup, South Africa, under Parreira’s coaching, drew with Mexico 1–1, lost to Uruguay 3–0, and beat France 2–1, finishing third in Group A. On 25 June 2010, Parreira announced his retirement as a football coach. He was, however, part of the Brazilian technical team during the 2014 World Cup.

According to Front Row Soccer, Carlos Alberto Parreira has been battling Hodgkin’s lymphoma. The publication also mentioned in Janurary that the former coach has been undergoing chemotherapy treatment for four months.

How will you rate Parreira’s tenure?
