Amakhosi went down 1-0 to defending champions and log leaders Mamelodi Sundowns in what was a brave performance at the Lucas Masterpieces Moripe stadium in Atteridgeville.
The single goal, scored in the 41st minute by Lucas Ribeiro Costa, proved decisive, as Amakhosi pushed the home side all the way and, with a bit of good fortune, might well have taken something from the game.
Kaizer Chiefs remained in eighth place in the standings on 25 points from 19 games played to date.
They are clinging to the final MTN8 spot for next season.
Amakhosi host Magesi FC at the FNB Stadium on Tuesday, 4 March (19:30) in the league before turning their attention to Saturday, 8 March’s Nedbank Cup quarter-final against Stellenbosch FC (18:00).
Costly slip-up
Meanwhile, Orlando Pirates dropped three points on the road, going down 2-0 to Marumo Gallants at Free State State stadium.
It was a costly slip-up for the Buccaneers as they saw the gap between themselves and Mamelodi Sundowns increase even further.
Orlando Pirates now trail Masandawana by a yawning 18 points, although the Soweto side do have four matches in hand.
Bucs’ title dream appears over for another season.
Orlando Pirates will next be in league action away from home against ninth-placed Chippa United on Wednesday, 5 March at 19:30.
