Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs won their respective midweek Betway Premiership matches but didn’t move up the log.

With Mamelodi Sundowns dropping points for the first time in six matches, the Buccaneers have closed down the gap to 16 points although they still have four games in hand. The Brazilians continue to lead the table with 55 points followed by Pirates with 39.

Kaizer Chiefs played on Tuesday, edging out Magesi FC 1-0 thanks to Ashley Du Preez’s second half goal. The win sees Amakhosi remain eighth but have now collected 28 points from 20 matches this season.

Their next focus is the Nedbank Cup quarter-finals where they will face Stellenbosch FC. Nasreddine Nabi’s men have already beaten Stellies twice this season and are surely favourites going into the clash.

The Buccaneers on the other hand, seemed to have lost the league title. A 2-0 defeat to Marumo Gallants appeared to have affected their moral and title chase but was a glimmer of hope. On Wednesday, Orlando Pirates were 1-0 victors over Chippa United to cut the lead to 16 points in the Betway Premiership.

This comes after log leaders Mamelodi Sundowns played to a 1-1 draw with Golden Arrows.

Can the Buccaneers fight back?
