Sundowns transfer news: Mngqithi reveals his ONLY signing
Manqoba Mngqithi continues to make headlines even though he’s no longer employed to Sundowns but which player did he personally sign?
Former Mamelodi Sundowns coach Manqoba Mngqithi has revealed the only player that he signed for the club.
In an interview with Robert Marawa on Radio 947, Mngqithi said he pushed hard for the acquisition of Iqraam Rayners.
Mngqithi made this revelation on the back of his departure from Sundowns where he was replaced by Miguel Cardoso.
Now, Rayners joined Sundowns from Stellenbosch FC soon after Mngqithi took over from Rulani Mokwena.
And according to the 52-year-old, after putting in a request to sign Rayners, a lot of people within the club supported him.
Rayners, 28, has fitted like a hand in a glove at Sundowns, scoring 10 goals in just 13 appearances since his arrival.
Mngqithi was addressing reports that Sporting Director Flemming Berg has the final say on who Sundowns sign and release.
Furthermore, Mngqithi admitted that the initiative of Berg having a say on new signings at Sundowns came before his tenure.
Now, this could mean players such as Arthur Sales, Kobamelo Kodisang and Kegan Johannes were brought in by other people within the club and not Mngqithi.
MNGQITHI ONLY SIGNED ONE PLAYER FOR SUNDOWNS
“I don’t want to come out on this platform and say I didn’t know anything [about player recruitments]. I’d be lying; I don’t want to lie,” Mngqithi said.
“Yes, this initiative [of Flemming having a say on signing players] started before me. So, when I got the opportunity, the only player that I personally requested from the club was Iqraam Rayners.
“That one is the player I personally requested, and I pushed. Fortunately, I got support from a lot of people in the club; that’s why it happened, and I appreciate that.”
