Mokoena is amused by something that Manqoba Mngqithi said
Sundowns midfield maestro Teboho Mokoena was visibly distracted and amused during his MTN8 presser alongside manager Manqoba Mnqithi. Go through the replies to the tweet below and you’ll see some theories why.
Teboho Mokoena still wants to play in Europe
“The dream is still alive,” he told the media. We still have the Club World Cup so we will see next year.
“I am happy to be at the club. I signed the contract because I know the project and want to be part of it. It was an easy decision for me to stay here because we still have the [FIFA] Club World Cup, we still CAF [Champions League] and we still have AFL [African Football League] and I still have Bafana Bafana on the side,” he said via SABC Sport.
Sundowns tie Williams and Mokoena down to new deals
Just recently in July, the champions extended Bafana stars Ronwen Williams and Mokoena’s existing contracts. Mokoena has become a lynch pin at Chloorkop, with 93 appearances and nine goals from a withdrawn midfield role. He’s also got 34 caps and six goals for his country.
“The public broadcaster has established the two parties have reached an agreement, with the 2023 PSL Footballer of the Year putting pen to paper on a new long-term deal to keep him at the club beyond June 2026,” SABC Sport reported.
“Downs did not entertain any of the offers, given their stance to hold on to their talisman by offering him a new and improved contract.
MT8 action on the horizon
Sundowns face Stellenbosch in the first leg of their semi-final clash on Wednesday 28 August with the second leg set for 1 September. Downs were beaten finalists in last year’s edition, going down to Orlando Pirates on penalties after a goalless draw. Manqoba Mngqithi and his charges begin the defence of their Betway Premiership crown on Friday 20 September away to TS Galaxy. Initially, they were to face SuperSport on the 14th but that fixture has been postponed because of their Caf Champions League qualifiers against Mbabane Swallows.
