Stellies keen to hijack Kaizer Chiefs striker deal
Stellenbosch are one of the best emerging clubs in the country and their activity in the transfer market underlines it.
Stellenbosch, winners of last season’s Carling Knockout, want to deal a blow to Kaizer Chiefs in their pursuit of a top PSL marksman.
Stellies in for Nguse
According to SoccerLaduma, Stellenbosch will put together an offer for rumoured Chiefs target Lungelo Nguse. Amakhosi see Nguse as a more realistic target after the failed pursuits of Fiston Mayele and Michael Olunga. Nguse, the 25-year-old nicknamed ‘Mbesuma’ has one goal from six league appearances for Golden Arrows this term. In 2023-2024 he plundered six strikes in the top-flight.
“What I know is that Chiefs are finding it difficult to get their priority signing in as far as the strikers are concerned and since they badly need a striker in January, they are back in for Golden Arrows striker Lungelo Nguse. They wanted him in the previous transfer window but they also were looking at Fiston Mayele and they could not get both of them,” said the Siya source.
“Then they looked at Kenyan striker Michael Olunga and it’s difficult to get him as well so now they are back in for Nguse. It’s looking good now as he is locally based and maybe the money wouldn’t be as high as it is for Mayele or Olunga. That’s the situation now,” the source added.
“The latest now is that Stellenbosch is also interested in him. That’s where the money issues would resurface again and the highest bidder could get him. But because Chiefs were the first to have shown interest then maybe they could consider them first. But, you know, in football anything is possible,” the second insider told the Siya crew.
Kaizer Chiefs still trailing veteran goal-getter Olunga
Chiefs initially wanted to sign the Congolese striker Fiston Mayele from Pyramids FC in Egypt, but the prolific Michael Olunga has since become the main target.
“You see, at the moment, the Fiston Mayele mission looks impossible because after losing Fagrie Lakay, Pyramids FC don’t want to lose Mayele as well. That’s why Chiefs are now looking at Michael (Olunga) for January as well,” a source told Soccer Laduma.
“So they are revisiting that interest. They feel it will be much easier getting Michael at this point than to stay on the Mayele chase.
“Yes, the main focus in January is on a striker and since it’s becoming clear that they may not get Fiston Mayele, they have reignited interest in Michael Olunga. But whatever the team does, they want to have a striker in January to play with Ranga (Chivaviro). At the moment Ranga is their main striker while Wandile (Duba) is like a second striker but more of a winger from Nabi’s point of view. So they are looking at Olunga once again,” a second source told the outlet.
Will Chiefs regret it if they miss out on Nguse?
