Rest In Peace: Former Sundowns coach dies

Remember Johan Neeskens at Mamelodi Sundowns? The Dutchman has sadly passed away at the age of 73.

Former Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Johan Neeskens has passed away at the age of 73 in the Netherlands.

JOHAN NEESKENS PASSES AWAY

Neeskens’ passing was announced by his former club and Dutch giants Ajax Amsterdam on Monday afternoon.

“We are deeply saddened to hear about the passing of Johan Neeskens. Our thoughts are with his family at this time,” Ajax announced.

“Rest in peace, Ajax legend,” the club concluded.

Neskeens, who’s playing career included the mighty FC Barcelona, coached Sundowns between July 2011 and July 2012.

From the 50 games with Kabo Yellow, Neeskens won 18 times, lost 16 times and drew 16 games before he resigned from Sundowns to join Turkish giants Galatasaray.

MAMELODI SUNDOWNS CONFIRM ALTON MEIRING’S DEATH

Meanwhile, the club known as Kabo Yellow have sent out condolences to the Meiring family.

“The Chairman and the Motsepe Family, the Board of Directors, Technical Team, Players, Management, Staff, Supporters of Mamelodi Sundowns FC & the entire Yellow Nation express their deepest condolences to the family and friends as we mourn the loss of former Mamelodi Sundowns striker, Alton Meiring.

“Some of the top flight teams that the Bafana Bafana international played for are AmaZulu, Jomo Cosmos, Hellenic, Golden Arrows and Moroka Swallows. We pray that the Almighty gives comfort and strength to the Meiring family, his friends and former teammates.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with his loved ones and family. Rest in Peace, Alton,” Sundowns concluded.

PSL MOMENTS OF SILENCE

“The Premier Soccer League (PSL) is deeply saddened by the passing of South African football legend, Alton Meiring,” the league said.

“The PSL extends its heartfelt condolences to the Meiring family, his former clubs, and the football community at large during this difficult time.

“A moment of silence will be observed in his honour at this weekend’s MTN8, Motsepe Foundation Championship and DStv Diski Challenge fixtures.

“May his soul repose peacefully.”
