Orlando Pirates are reportedly preparing a two-year contract extension for Tshegofatso Mabasa.

“As we speak now, his contract will run until June 2027,” SoccerLaduma confirmed.

“The club has already exercised the two years on his contract. It’s not a direct extension or a new contract. For now, they have taken up the option they had on the player, and that’s within their rights to do so. His previous contract was coming to an end in June this year.

“What they want to do is try and keep Mabasa, Evidence Makgopa, and Zakhele Lepasa, but they are not ruling out bringing in another striker next season. They have already identified some of the strikers they are targeting,” the source concluded.

Mabasa is on the brink of becoming the Buccaneers all-time leading goalscorer, further solidifying their reasoning behind the new deal. The former Royal AM forward has netted 44 goals in 118 Orlando Pirates appearances.

Pirates back in business

Jose Riveiro defeated Mamelodi Sundowns for the first time in his PSL career thanks to Relebohile Mofokeng’s brace in the opening five minutes. And while Masandawana still has a commanding lead, the Pirate’s victory puts them back in the title race.

The Spanish boss, delighted at his team’s performance, had this to say after the game; “Every point is important in a league where it seems there’s one team who’s going to finish close to 80 points, probably by the end of the season,” said Riveiro

“So obviously if you want to compete with them, when you look at the schedule, you cannot say to yourself, ‘Okay, here if we get a point, it’s fine’, or even today playing against them, ‘If we get a point, it’s going to be alright’, it’s not.

“You have to always fight for the maximum points, and again, it’s a pity that we’re not arriving in this game – obviously we’re going into the space of the ‘ifs’, but still we have four games more to play than them,” the Orlando Pirates manager explained.

“It would have been nice to have [had] those games played already, come here and maybe, I don’t know, even if we are six or seven points behind them and even three points, just that little advantage would give the game a different dimension, I’m sure.”

Is Mabasa an Orlando Pirates great?
