Orlando Pirates will undoubtedly be looking to challenge Mamelodi Sundowns for DStv Premiership honours next season.
The Buccaneers lifted both the Nedbank Cup and MTN8 titles last season however, they fell well short in the league.
Jose Riveiro’s side finished an astonishing 23 points behind champions Sundowns. And now, the club know very well that they’ll have to assemble an extraordinary squad to compete with Rhulani Mokwena’s star-studded team.
The Buccaneers are finalising a number of new signings and at the top of the list is Thalente Wandile Mbatha.
Mbatha won’t exactly be a ‘new’ signing as he spent last season on loan at the club. However, Orlando Pirates are now pushing to sign him on a permanent basis from his parent club SuperSport United!
Orlando Pirates to make Mbatha stay permanent
“At the moment, they [Orlando Pirates] are busy talking with SuperSport United to finalise the deal and make it permanent,” Mbatha’s agent Mike Makaab told FARPost.
“But the deal is going to happen. It was already pre-agreed in the original agreement. Orlando Pirates had a loan with an option to make it permanent.”

In other news, Orlando Pirates star Relebohile Mofokeng’s rise to football stardom has been simply incredible.
Just 14 months ago, the teenager was yet to make his senior debut for the club.
Mofokeng was promoted to the Buccaneers first team at the beginning of last year. Since making his debut in March 2023, Mofokeng has already made 40 appearances for the club!
The Orlando Pirates starlet has already scored six goals while assisting seven more for the club.
Bucs offer rising star bumper new contract
Mofokeng’s form means he’ll receive a new and improved contract in Mayfair!
The 19-year-old who was on a standard first team contract after graduating from the club’s academy will reportedly receive a bumper five-year contract!
“According to the insider, Orlando Pirates have turned their attention to the 19-year-old’s contract with the club,” a Soccer Laduma report read.
“It is understood to see a significant change in it, with better terms tabled by the Buccaneers. Not only are the Buccaneers understood to be tying down the Vaal-born star, but they also want to reward the player for his efforts this campaign.
“Whispers of a new five-year contract has also been doing the rounds, though talks are believed to be underway.”
