Orlando Pirates star preparing for a different role at the club as contract nears Its end.

Pirates are reportedly working on a ground breaking plan to redefine captain Innocent Maela’s role. With his playing contract set to expire in June, sources close to the Buccaneers reveal that the club is keen to retain Maela in a non-playing capacity, ensuring his invaluable presence remains a part of the team’s future.

Leadership role beyond the field

Maela, who has seen limited playing time recently, could transition into a managerial or developmental role within the club. Insiders confirm that discussions are already underway to shape a new path for the 32-year-old stalwart.

One source explained, “For now, it seems the main focus is not on his playing contract but what the team could offer him outside the field of play. They don’t want to see what happened to Happy Jele where the team wanted him to stay outside the playing side. Whether it’s in management, media, or even coaching the juniors, that is what the team is working on together with the player himself (to discuss his future).”

The Buccaneers’ approach demonstrates the high level of trust and respect they have for Maela, who has been a consistent leader.

Orlando Pirates’ proactive strategy also involves identifying Maela’s on-field successor. The club is reportedly monitoring Fawaaz Basadien as a potential replacement, aiming to bolster the left-back position. This move is expected to bring competition for Paseka Mako and allow Deon Hotto more freedom to play an attacking role.

Another insider shared insights on this strategy, saying, “They have been monitoring Fawaaz Basadien as a replacement for Maela and to give Paseka Mako some competition while at the same time giving Deon Hotto more freedom to attack. They are doing this because they are looking ahead when Maela retires and takes up a different role at the club. They are already working on that.”

Maela’s impact and Pirates legacy

Maela’s journey with the Buccaneers began in 2017 after a successful loan spell at Thanda Royal Zulu, where he helped the team secure promotion to the Betway Premiership. Since then, he has become a mainstay for the Pirates, serving as a reliable defender and inspirational leader. While his recent playing time has decreased, his contributions to the club’s success and culture remain undeniable.

As Maela’s playing career approaches its twilight, the Buccaneers’ commitment to securing his future within the organization underscores their forward-thinking approach. Whether through management, media roles, or mentoring the next generation, Maela’s influence at Orlando Pirates is set to continue.
