Orlando Pirates sailed to the top of the league with an impressive 2-0 victory over SuperSport United.

Pirates clinched the top spot in the standings after a convincing victory on Tuesday evening at Orlando Stadium. This win marks the Pirates’ fourth consecutive victory, solidifying their strong start to the season.

Following a disappointing 3-2 loss to Magesi in the Carling Knockout, Pirates wasted no time shaking off their recent setback. Bafana Bafana striker Evidence Makgopa opened the scoring early, expertly prodding the ball past SuperSport goalkeeper Ricardo Goss after being played through on goal. This early strike helped eliminate any lingering doubts from their previous defeat.

Tactical battle and key moments

While Pirates controlled possession in the first half, SuperSport United posed a significant threat, creating several scoring opportunities. A pivotal moment occurred just before halftime when Pogiso Sanoka’s reckless challenge on Relebohile Mofokeng resulted in a yellow card. Many fans felt he was fortunate to avoid a more severe punishment, as his studs dangerously rolled over the ball before connecting with the player.

Gavin Hunt’s side, aiming to avoid a third loss in their opening five matches, displayed resilience as they pressed for an equaliser in the first 18 minutes of the second half. However, the Pirates’ tactical discipline shone through, as they thwarted SuperSport’s advances and prevented clear-cut chances. Hunt made strategic substitutions, introducing Donay Jansen, Ime Okon, and Keanin Ayer.

Adjustments by Riveiro

In response, Pirates’ coach Jose Riveiro adjusted his tactics by bringing on captain Innocent Maela and Kabelo Dlamini, mirroring SuperSport’s formation change with Deon Hotto and Deano van Rooyen transitioning to wing-back roles.

A late goal from Deon Hotto sealed the victory for Pirates, ensuring their perfect record remained intact. With this win, the Buccaneers moved to the top of the league, surpassing Mamelodi Sundowns. Van Rooyen’s stellar performance earned him the Betway Premiership Man of the Match award, thanks to his outstanding contributions both in attack and defence.

As the season progresses, Pirates fans eagerly anticipate what lies ahead for their team after this strong start.
