Orlando Pirates: Riveiro confident despite Ndah’s injury setback
Pirates coach Jose Riveiro remains confident in his squad’s depth to overcome Ndah’s injury setback as they prepare to face Magesi FC.
Orlando Pirates head coach Jose Riveiro remains optimistic about the squad’s ability to overcome the injury setback of key defender Olisa Ndah. With the team set to host Magesi FC this Saturday, Riveiro emphasizes the depth and quality within his squad, ensuring they continue their impressive form this season.
Strong start with MTN8 victory
Before the recent FIFA international break, the Pirates successfully defended their MTN8 title for the third consecutive year under Riveiro’s leadership. They achieved this victory without Ndah, who will miss the remainder of the year due to a tibia fracture. Nkosanathi Sibisi stepped up in Ndah’s absence, forming a solid defensive partnership with Thabiso Sesane, exemplified in their 3-1 win against Stellenbosch.
Riveiro expressed his empathy for Ndah and the challenges injuries pose for players. “We feel for them, all of them, but not in a sense that it’s a headache,” he stated, as quoted by iDiski Times.
He acknowledged that footballers thrive on being on the field, particularly Ndah, who was enjoying an exceptional moment in his career. However, Riveiro remains confident in his squad’s ability to adapt: “We have quality in the squad. Enough to immediately find the player who is going to replace Olisa.”
With Tapelo Xoki returning soon and captain Innocent Maela available, Riveiro has ample options to fill Ndah’s role. He noted, “The headaches are always the same, to find the best starting XI to play in a squad of 39 players.”
Maintaining momentum without Ndah
While Ndah and Sesane had begun to build a formidable partnership. Riveiro acknowledges the importance of depth in maintaining competitive levels across multiple tournaments, including the league, CAF Champions League, Carling Knockout, and Nedbank Cup.
“The fact that Olisa is not going to be around for a long time is something we cannot change,” he added ahead of the Carling clash with Magesi. Riveiro emphasised that the medical team is working diligently to ensure Ndah’s swift recovery. But their focus must remain on the players ready to compete.
A unified team mentality
Riveiro’s philosophy centers on a cohesive team effort, stating. “We are going to find a way to continue being a team. Who is not depending on one or two players.” Regardless of who steps onto the pitch, the Pirates aim to maintain their playing style and mentality.
“Even though we would like to have everyone available for selection, that’s not a discussion,” he concluded. With Riveiro’s leadership and the squad’s resilience, Orlando Pirates are set to tackle the challenges ahead with determination and unity.
