Tshegofatso Mabasa is steadily becoming a legend at Orlando Pirates.

The 28-year-old striker has quietly made his mark during the six years he has spent with the Buccaneers. Having won several trophies with the club, Mabasa is now pursuing one of its biggest records. He has scored 44 goals in 111 matches and needs just 15 more goals to become the club’s all-time leading goalscorer.

Tshegofatso Mabasa has impressed in the last two seasons

This season, Mabasa has scored 12 goals in 30 matches across all competitions, which is lower than his performance last season. In the previous campaign, the Bafana Bafana striker netted 19 goals in 33 matches, finishing as the league’s top goalscorer with 16 goals, thus winning the Golden Boot award.

Tshegofatso Mabasa joined Orlando Pirates in 2019 from Bloemfontein Celtic and immediately hit the ground running. After Jose Riveiro took over as coach in 2022, the striker was loaned out to Sekhukhune United and then Moroka Swallows.

During his time with Swallows, he found his form and was recalled to the Pirates during the January transfer window.

His second stint at Orlando Pirates has proved fruitful, and Tshegofatso Mabasa has become one of the most feared strikers in the PSL. With atleast 20 matches to be played this season, he might still break the record this season. Against Baroka, the former Bloemfontein Celtic striker netted his second hat-trick of the season to give the Buccaneers a 3-1 in the Nedbank Cup round of 16.

Orlando Pirates all-time scorer is Benedict ‘Tso’ Vilakazi with 58 goals. Tshegofatso Mabasa is now second on the list.

Can Mabasa break Tso’s record?
