Mamelodi Sundowns have reportedly agreed on a long-term deal with their star midfielder, Teboho Mokoena.

The 27-year-old was linked to several European clubs since his impressive showing at this year’s Africa Cup of Nations. Egyptian giants Ahly Ahly were also said to be interested in the Bafana Bafana maestro. According to the SABC, Teboho Mokoena and Sundowns have agreed on a long-term deal to keep the player at Chloorkop beyond 2026.

“The public broadcaster has established the two parties have reached an agreement, with the 2023 PSL Footballer of the Year putting pen to paper on a new long-term deal to keep him at the club beyond June 2026,” SABC Sport reported.

“Downs did not entertain any of the offers, given their stance to hold on to their talisman by offering him a new and improved contract.

Sundowns and Teboho Mokoena agree to a new deal

“It’s now understood The Brazilians will soon make an announcement to confirm Teboho Mokoena will join goalkeeper Ronwen Williams as one of the players who’ve agreed a long-term deal despite being courted abroad,” the report concluded.

The Sundowns duo Teboho Mokoena and Ronwen Williams were instrumental in Bafana’s Afcon success. The team finished third in the tournament, which was their best performance since 2000. Both players have now committed to Sundowns despite interest from several clubs

Teboho Mokoena might have blown his only chance to move to Europe especially given he’s at his peak. His performance against Morocco elevated his career but he might just waste his best football years at Masandawana instead of playing competitive football in Europe.

Did Mokoena make the right choice to stay at Downs?
