Manie Libbok breaks silence after concussion scare: Is he okay?
Stormers fly-half Manie Libbok breaks his silence but what is the extensive damage for the Springbok World Cup winner?
Manie Libbok, the dynamic Springboks and Stormers fly-half, has made his first public statement following a brutal tackle that left him hospitalized. The incident occurred during the Investec Champions Cup clash at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium, where Libbok was on the receiving end of a reckless high tackle by Toulon’s Yannick Youyoutte.
The tackle not only led to Youyoutte’s red card but also sidelined Libbok indefinitely. Despite the red card, Toulon held onto their 24-14 lead, securing victory over the Stormers. For Libbok and the team, however, the focus has now shifted to recovery and adapting to their injury-plagued roster.
Libbok’s instagram update inspires fans
In his first message since the injury, Libbok took to Instagram to thank supporters for their outpouring of encouragement. “Appreciate the messages of support—grateful and blessed to keep going!” he captioned a series of photos in his Stormers kit, offering fans a sense of hope despite his absence from the field.
The Stormers’ medical team is closely monitoring Libbok’s recovery. While his return to play remains uncertain, he could be back in action for the United Rugby Championship (URC) match against the Lions on December 21, followed by a highly anticipated coastal derby against the Sharks.
Stormers’ injury woes deepen ahead of Harlequins clash
The Stormers are grappling with a mounting injury crisis as they prepare for their second Champions Cup game against Harlequins. With Libbok, Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu, and Damian Willemse sidelined, Jurie Matthee is expected to don the number ten jersey.
Adding to the pressure, defence coach Norman Laker acknowledged the team’s struggles. “At the moment we do have a lot of injuries, we can’t look away from it. It will take one or two youngsters to make it into a matchday 23 or just train with the team to make sure we have the numbers,” he explained. Despite the setbacks, Laker highlighted opportunities for young talent, noting that “one or two of them will get an opportunity to prove what they’ve shown us in the Currie Cup.”
Promising returns and new challenges
There is a glimmer of optimism for the Stormers as Feinberg-Mngomezulu resumes training this week. “He is allowed to start training from Wednesday onwards,” Laker confirmed, adding, “But the doctor said another week will do him good.”
Additionally, Springboks lock Salmaan Moerat has re-entered the selection mix and may feature in this weekend’s game against Harlequins. However, head coach John Dobson faces a tough balancing act as he manages an increasingly youthful and inexperienced squad against a formidable Premiership opponent.
With their injury list growing, the Stormers must navigate a challenging path in the Champions Cup. Fans will be eager to see how the team’s young players rise to the occasion, especially as seasoned veterans like Libbok work towards recovery. As the URC fixtures approach, the Stormers’ resilience and depth will be put to the ultimate test.
