Mamelodi Sundowns eye Stellenbosch forward as new plan if certain players leave.
Sundowns are preparing for a possible striker reshuffle, with Stellies’ Ashley Cupido emerging as a prime target. The Chloorkop giants may lose key forwards amid growing interest from European and Middle Eastern clubs, prompting them to scout reinforcements.
Sundowns stars attract international attention
Lucas Ribeiro Costa, Peter Shalulile, and Iqraam Rayners have all caught the attention of clubs abroad. Sources within Sundowns confirm that the club has identified Cupido as a possible replacement, but any final decision will depend on transfer activity at the end of the season.
“The club scouts and recruiters are looking at different strikers who can fit into the Sundowns system, both locally and abroad, and they have considered Ashley (Cupido) from Stellenbosch at this point. He is still young and has a great future, and they feel that he could easily adapt to the way Sundowns play,” a source revealed.
Sundowns prioritise smart transfer moves
Sundowns are not looking to offload multiple strikers without careful evaluation. The club remains open to allowing players to move abroad but only if the offers align with their expectations.
“They won’t just let three or four strikers leave. They will evaluate the offers on the table first and consider the value these strikers add to the team before making any decisions. Only after that will they move for Ashley Cupido. But as things stand, he is their first choice locally if they need to sign a striker,” the source added.
Cupido’s rising stock in SA Football
Cupido, formerly with Cape Town Spurs, made the move to Stellenbosch FC at the start of the current season after drawing interest from clubs like Kaizer Chiefs. The 23-year-old has since featured in 17 matches and netted five goals, further establishing himself as one of the country’s most promising young forwards.
With Sundowns monitoring their striker situation closely, Cupido could be in line for a high-profile move if transfer developments open the door. Fans will be watching closely as the season progresses to see if Sundowns make their move for the talented forward.
