Kaizer Chiefs midfielder George Matlou, months away from free agency, has yet to receive a contract extension as the club continues weighing up their options.

The 26-year-old maestro played his first game of the season in early January following months on the sideline due to injury. This is just one of many setbacks the former Moroka Swallows man has faced throughout his career, and it appears Kaizer Chiefs are cautious of his injury-prone nature.

With under six months left on his contract, Matlou can sign a pre-contract elsewhere but remains determined to earn his spot in Soweto. Kaizer Chiefs are undecided about what the future holds for Matlou, telling him that he must earn a contract extension through consistency and good performances.

“The club has made it clear to him [Matlou] that the games he will play between now and the of the season determine his future,” a source revealed.

“They have told him that they understand that the injury has disrupted his progress at the club and the technical team has given him the chance to play then it’s now up to him to save his own career.”

Tanzanian targets

According to reports, Kaizer Chiefs are eyeing Young African’s duo, Prince Dube and Djigui Diarra, as well as Azam midfielder Feisal Salum, who has been on the club’s radar since Nasreddine Nabi’s arrival last offseason.

A Salum-Nabi reunion appears to be on the cards after the former refused to sign a contract extension with Azam FC.

“Informal talks between Chiefs and Azam have already started, but as you know, until an offer has been submitted, there’ll be denials all over. But what I can tell you is that talks have indeed started,” a source confirmed.

“Football is business, Azam may say now that they’re not willing to sell, but they know that they’ll have to sell if the player doesn’t want to renew his contract. They won’t want to risk losing him for free.”
