Kaizer Chiefs and Itumeleng Khune are believed to be engaged in talks to bring the ex-goalkeeper back to the club.

Khune was released by Chiefs at the end of the previous season, having been honoured for his 25-year service.

Khune released by Chiefs last season

Chiefs had come out at the start of the previous campaign to confirm that Khune would get a final contract extension. They stated that the club legend would then be given an opportunity to continue working behind the scenes at Amakhosi. The message didn’t quite seem to filter through to the former Bafana Bafana number one, however. He repeatedly reiterated his desire to continue playing until he was 40.

It looked as if Chiefs was giving a final hint to Khune. This after honouring him before and after a game against Polokwane City, marking his 25-year anniversary at the club. But even at the end of that occasion, he emphasised that, the moment didn’t spell a ‘goodbye’. But ultimately it did, and it remains his last game for his boyhood side.

According to Soccer-Laduma, Chiefs and Khune are still engaged in talks for him to return in some capacity!

Club still want him back

“Yes, the club still wants to work with Itu (Khune). They feel that he still has a lot to offer outside the playing field and that’s why the talks never stopped. The club understands that he has other responsibilities in his life but they are looking at a possible way of formulating a conducive working partnership which will suit both parties and that’s why they are still talking to him regarding that position in the marketing and commercial department with Jessica,” said one source.

A second source stated that Chiefs want Khune to eventually help their goalkeeper coaching department.

Goalkeeper coach eventually?

“For now it could be for the marketing and commercial department but they (Chiefs) also want him (Khune) to do his coaching badges and impact his knowledge to the young and upcoming goalkeepers. The club believes he still has a lot to contribute to the team in terms of teaching the young goalkeepers the ropes as he has been there and done almost everything for the team. So, no matter which department works for him, the club still wants him back,” said the source.
