Kaizer Chiefs head coach Nasreddine Nabi has explained why he did not play star player Gaston Sirino on Wednesday.

Amakhosi claimed a 2-1 win over Richards Bay at the Peter Mokaba Stadium. Goals from Wandile Duba and Ashley du Preez gave the Glamour Boys all three points while Yanela Mbuthuma got the consolation goal for the Natal Rich Boyz.

Nabi said he did not want to risk Sirino thus he gave Pule Mmodi his first start for Kaizer Chiefs this season.

“He’s coming from an injury; even the [Home of Legends] tournament that we played in [Port Elizabeth] he was injured,” the Tunisian clarified.

“We were planning to give him some minutes during the game but given the circumstances with the red card we couldn’t risk it but we’ll probably see him in the next games,” Nabi said.

On Wednesday, Amakhosi coach decided to give Du Preez, Sibongiseni “Ox” Mthethwa and Mmodi a rare start. After the match, the Tunisian coach was full of praise for the trio.

“I’m very happy with the players that started today [Wednesday], especially Ashley. This is going to boost his confidence going forward,” Nabi said after the Richards Bay game.

“Ox gave an unbelievable performance. Mmodi did his job very well, but we believe they can do better.”

Since taking over from Kaizer Chiefs in July, Nasreddine Nabi has won four matches across all competitions this season. Amakhosi next host Royal AM in a Betway Premiership clash this Saturday.
