Kaizer Chiefs are banking on their new signing to solve their problems but is it enough?
Chiefs have actively pursued a reliable striker since Nassereddine Nabi stepped in as head coach. The club identified several top transfer targets but failed to secure their signatures. Refusing to waste time, Chiefs quickly shifted their focus and sealed a deal for Tashreeq Morris during the January transfer window.
With their striking concerns still looming, the team now counts on Morris to step up and deliver the goals they desperately need.
Chiefs place high hopes on Morris
A source close to the club revealed that management sees great potential in Morris and believes he can fill the goal-scoring gap.
“They needed a striker and found that Morris would be the right fit for now. Though he has played just four games and scored one goal, they have high hopes for him. The belief is that he offers something different from the other strikers,” the source shared.
Chiefs recognize that adapting to their playing style takes time, but they are confident Morris will become a valuable asset. His unique attributes set him apart from current options like Ranga Chivaviro, Wandile Duba, Ashley Du Preez, and youngster Naledi Hlongwane.
Was signing Morris the right move?
Some within the club initially questioned whether signing a new striker mid-season was necessary. The belief was that the existing attacking options could carry the team until the next transfer window. However, once the opportunity arose, Chiefs decided Morris could be the solution to their struggles in front of goal.
“They debated whether Chivaviro, Duba, Du Preez, and Hlongwane could do the job until season’s end, but ultimately, they felt they couldn’t pass up on Morris. Now, they need him to start scoring consistently,” the source added.
Injury setback for Morris
Morris suffered an injury during Chiefs’ 1-0 loss to Sundowns on Saturday and will be sidelined for two weeks. The 30-year-old has managed just one goal in four games, but Chiefs remain optimistic that he will play a crucial role once he returns.
Can Morris rise to the challenge and become the goal-scorer Chiefs desperately need? Fans will be watching closely as he works to make his mark at Amakhosi.
