Orlando Pirates legend Jomo Sono has pleaded with his former club to groom Relebohile Mofokeng properly.

The 19-year-old has been marvellous to watch since he broke out at the age of 17. With two seasons under his belt, the youngster has been one of the Buccaneers’ top players earning a callup to the national team.

Against Uganda, Mofokeng’s impact made a difference to inspire Bafana Bafana to a 2-2 draw after coming on when the team was trailing 2-1. Sono acknowledged that the Pirates teen is talented but pleaded for the football fraternity to protect him.

“To be honest, he (Mofokeng) is highly talented, he needs to be protected,” the Pirates legend le told Prime Sports with Mahlatse Mphahlele.

“I think the coach at Orlando Pirates did a good job (against Cape Town City in the MTN8 match) when he pulled him off because the kid was starting to struggle,” Jomo Sono added.

“When a kid like him starts to struggle, you take him out, that is how to protect and build him so that next game he comes in. (Thami) Mkhize was physically a bit stronger for him”.

Pirates Legend Jomo Sono says Mofokeng has a bright future

“Even though he scored, it was a bit difficult for him. After scoring that goal, he could not pass through him, he was shoving him all over the place, and he was tackling him. But he has got a bright future and he needs to be protected.”

Mofokeng has already played in big games for Pirates scoring in the final against Mamelodi Sundowns last season.

How good will Mofokeng be at 25?
