Former Kaizer Chiefs winger George Lebese reveals how Amakhosi boss Bobby Motaung was upset when he jumped ship in 2017.

The 36-year-old retired footballer left Amakhosi after eight years to join his boyhood club Mamelodi Sundowns in 2017. His dream move turned into a nightmare as he only made a handful of appearances in the two years he spent in Chloorkop.

Speaking to Marawa Sports Worldwide on 947, the former Kaizer Chiefs fan favourite recalled his conversation with Motaung.

“I still remember our last conversation vividly when he put a paper [a renewal contract]. I was sitting across from him. And I said to him, ‘I’m not renewing’. I still remember how his face looked. He was in shock because he didn’t see that coming,” Lebese said.

Lebese told Kaizer Chiefs boss Bobby that he was not renewing contract

Having spent almost a decade at Chiefs, Lebese made a high-profile move to his boyhood club Sundowns in 2017. He said he had to apologise to Bobby after he left Kaizer Chiefs for Downs.

“Looking back at how things happened, it was like, ‘What have I done to this human being that has changed my life?’. I’ve always been apologetic about it. I sent him a message, I think, two weeks after I signed. I sent him messages to apologise. I met with him once. I apologised again. I feel like that’s one person that I’ve disappointed immensely.”

Lebese’s two-year stay with Sundowns was not a success and left to join Colorado Springs Switchbacks only for Covid to cut his stay short.
