Let’s go inside Kaizer Chiefs’ strategy to land one of their striker targets. Here is the latest.

Chiefs may have executed a calculated move to secure striker Tumisang Orebonye for next season, with insiders linking the transfer of former Chiefs defender Thatayaone Ditlhokwe to Libyan side Al-Ittihad as a key part of the plan.

The connection between Ditlhokwe and Orebonye

Ditlhokwe recently completed a move to Al-Ittihad, the same club that signed Orebonye from Moroccan side AS FAR. According to sources close to the matter, this arrangement was not a coincidence but rather a strategic maneuver by Chiefs to land Orebonye in the next transfer window.

“It is a tricky situation but that is what Chiefs and Al-Ittihad are working on. Chiefs wanted Orebonye from AS FAR but could not get him and it’s believed that they apparently discussed with the Libyan side on how the sale of Ditlhokwe could land them Orebonye,” an insider revealed.

Why Chiefs had to get creative in the market

Chiefs faced difficulties in negotiating directly with AS FAR for Orebonye, particularly because of their former coach Nasreddine Nabi, who now leads Amakhosi. Reports indicate that AS FAR was reluctant to sell the Botswana international to their ex-coach, forcing Chiefs to seek alternative methods.

“They (the Libyan club) can keep him until the next transfer window. So, that’s the situation—Chiefs had to sacrifice the defender to get the striker for next season. AS FAR could have not released or sold the Botswana international to their former coach Nasreddine Nabi, and that’s why it’s believed that Chiefs had to make this arrangement with Al-Ittihad as one way of signing one of their targeted strikers,” the source added.

Chiefs are not stopping at Orebonye

While Orebonye remains a priority target, Chiefs are actively scouting other striker options to strengthen their attacking lineup.

“Yes, there is a plan in place on how they could sign Tumisang (Orebonye) from Al-Ittihad next season. But he is not the only striker they are looking at. They still have other targets but will apparently use the arrangement they have agreed with the Libyan side to sign Orebonye. They need other options as well though,” the insider disclosed.

The 28-year-old Botswana international made a name for himself under Nabi’s management at AS FAR after joining from Algerian club USM Alger in January 2024. When Nabi took over as Chiefs’ head coach, Orebonye became one of the club’s top transfer targets.

With Chiefs strategically positioning themselves for the next transfer window. Fans will be eager to see if this calculated move pays off. Will Orebonye finally wear the Amakhosi jersey next season? Time will tell, but all signs point to a well-executed plan in motion.
