How Kaizer Chiefs can lift the Nedbank Cup

Kaizer Chiefs have scored seven goals in the Nedbank Cup so far this season and surely look like a team to beat.

Kaizer Chiefs seem to be hitting their stride at the right time, having already reached the quarter-finals of the Nedbank Cup.

The Soweto giants have won five out of their nine matches this year and remain unbeaten in their last three games. Their only defeat came earlier this month when they lost 1-0 to their rivals, Orlando Pirates. Since then, Amakhosi have scored six goals in three matches, winning two of those games.

This past weekend, Kaizer Chiefs triumphed over Chippa United with a convincing 3-0 victory to secure their place in the Nedbank Cup quarter-finals once again. The Glamour Boys are aiming to reach their first domestic cup final in six years, with their last appearance ending in disappointment as they were beaten 1-0 by TS Galaxy, who were then in the Motsepe Foundation Championship.

How can Kaizer Chiefs win the Nedbank Cup?

Firstly, they need a favorable draw in the quarter-finals. A matchup against Durban City might work in their favor, but given the club’s history of unexpectedly being eliminated by underdogs, this draw could be tricky. SuperSport United is also still in the competition, and on paper, they should pose little challenge for the Glamour Boys.

Secondly, Kaizer Chiefs would benefit from Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns facing each other in the quarter-finals. Currently, Chiefs do not have the squad strength to defeat both teams in the same tournament. This season, Kaizer Chiefs have lost all their matches against these two rivals, so asking them to beat both in the Nedbank Cup might be too much.

Lastly, Amakhosi must treat every match in the competition like a final and avoid suspensions and unnecessary bookings.
