CT Spurs CEO reportedly closes negotiations with Kaizer Chiefs, according to Kick Off

Spurs boss Alexi Efstathiou has provided an update on the stalled negotiations with Kaizer Chiefs over Bafana Bafana international Asanele Velebayi. In a recent interview Efstathiou hinted that the Spurs have shut the door on further discussions with the Amakhosi. Chiefs’ initial offer for Velebayi fell short of Spurs’ valuation, which reflects the significant investment and development the player has undergone since the age of 10.

The Urban Warriors have rejected Kaizer Chiefs’ bid, which they felt undervalued Velebayi’s talent and the resources invested in his development. Even efforts from the player’s parents to sway Spurs’ decision proved unsuccessful. At just 21 years old, Velebayi has already accumulated 99 professional appearances, making him a highly sought-after talent. Despite the ongoing interest, Efstathiou made it clear that the club remains committed to honouring Velebayi’s current contract.

Efstathiou: No Changes in plans

When asked about the possibility of keeping an unhappy player, Efstathiou firmly stated, “The shop is closed now. We are focusing on our first game of the season against Tuks. If you are not happy with your wife, that doesn’t mean you change a wife every year.” He emphasized that many young players would be thrilled to have a professional contract like Velebayi’s, underscoring the club’s stance on maintaining their current squad.

Chiefs still seeking a striker: Gabadinho Mhango’s future uncertain

In other transfer news, Kaizer Chiefs continue their search for a proven striker as the new season approaches. Malawian international Gabadinho Mhango, currently with Marumo Gallants, has been a long-standing target for Chiefs. Recent speculation about Mhango joining Chiefs was fueled by Mike Makaab’s comments about a striker being discussed with the club. However, Makaab has clarified that the striker in question is not Mhango. “Yes, there is a striker that we have offered to Chiefs, but that striker is not Mhango. There is no interest from Chiefs in Mhango,” Makaab stated.

Mhango’s future with Marumo Gallants remains unclear

Despite Makaab’s denial, Mhango’s future remains uncertain. A source close to Mhango revealed that the player could still leave Marumo Gallants. “The way things stand now, Gaba (Mhango) can still leave Marumo. He has one year remaining on his contract, but if a good buyer comes through, they might let him go,” the source disclosed. Mhango’s high salary, which continues from his previous contract with Moroka Swallows, might prompt Marumo Gallants to consider a sale to reduce their financial commitments.

Cape Town Spurs have definitively closed negotiations with Kaizer Chiefs for Asanele Velebayi, rejecting the Amakhosi’s undervalued offer. Meanwhile, Chiefs are refocusing their striker search, with Gabadinho Mhango’s potential move to the club now off the table. As the new season nears, both Spurs and Chiefs are set to navigate their respective challenges in the transfer market.
