Confirmed: ex-Chiefs and Pirates target joins rivals!
A former Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates has found a new home after being rendered surplus to requirements by his club during the January window.
SuperSport United finalised their signing of Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Lebohang Maboe on loan until the end of the season.
Maboe, once a Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates target, had struggled for game time at Sundowns for a few seasons.
Maboe joined Sundowns after a sterling 2017/18 season with Maritzburg United (Now Durban City). After helping to keep their topflight status, he was also a Bafana Bafana International at the time and saw both Chiefs and Pirates interested. In the end, it was Masandawana who won the race to his signature.
Chiefs and Pirates once interested in Maboe
Even though Maboe has won a lot of trophies as part of the Sundowns squad, he has hardly contributed. As he struggled for game time at club level, he also lost ground in terms of his international place. Because of his quality, Chiefs and Pirates never stopped showing an interest in him. Now after another busy transfer window for the Brazilians, he was finally put up for loan/ sale.
It was initially thought that Sekhukhune United were the club closest to signing him from Sundowns. It was SuperSport that got Maboe’s signature on a loan deal in the end. Matsatsantsa took to their social media platforms to announce the arrival of the 30-year-old.
“SuperSport United is pleased to confirm the signing of midfielder Lebohang Maboe from Mamelodi Sundowns until the end of the season. Welcome Lebza” read the statement.
Sundowns loan him to SuperSport
It is unclear that either Chiefs or Pirates were keen on taking Maboe on board from Sundowns this past window. Amakhosi bolstered their midfield by signing Bafana international Thabo Cele. The Buccaneers didn’t make a signing despite being rumoured to be interested in Thato Khiba and Sinoxolo Kwayiba in midfield.
Chiefs and Pirates fans, would you have liked to see Maboe at your respective clubs? Or is SuperSport now the right level for him? Feel free to leave your thoughts and feelings in the comments below!
