Mamelodi Sundowns are set to complete their second signing of a Bafana Bafana international this January transfer window!

Earlier in the January window, Sundowns announced the signing of long-term midfield target Jayden Adams from Stellenbosch FC.

Cupido agrees to join Sundowns

It was initially expected that the Adams announcement would quickly be followed up by another. This in the form of Bafana Bafana striker Lebo Mothiba. The former Strasbourg striker has been on trials at various clubs since his release from the French side. After failing to impress former Sundowns coach Rulani Mokwena, the target man was given a lifeline at the Brazilians. While it was expected that he will sign a short-term deal, those expectations have since been tempered.

Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso confirmed Mothiba is not in a condition to play and is just training for now. So he will not be the second Bafana player joining this window. That tag, however, will go to Cape Town City centre back Keanu Cupido. On Monday, iDiski Times confirmed that the two clubs had reached an agreement on his for R10 million.

“Mamelodi Sundowns are close to sealing a deal for Cape Town City defender Keanu Cupido in a deal in excess of R10 million. Sources within City confirmed Cupido expressed his desire to return to Gauteng after eight years outside, having spent one season in France with AC Ajaccio before joining City in 2018 and establishing himself as one of the leading defenders in the league. City had initially set an asking price of around R15-million but the two parties have now agreed on a transfer that could reach up to R11-million for his services. The player is expected to report to Chloorkop imminently ahead of his official announcement.” Wrote the publication.

City coach Ertugral confirms transfer is done

Now according to the FARPost, Cape Town City coach Mushin Ertugral has confirmed Cupido’s move to Sundowns.

“Yeah, the deal has been done. Keanu (Cupido), obviously, is a great player. He looks for bigger challenges for himself, and he deserves it (Sundowns move). So, I think we’re good in the defensive line. We still have the youngster Sibusiso Ziba, and I was thinking I could give him a chance today.” said Ertugral.

Sundowns have recently released Rushine de Reuck on loan to Israeli topflight side Maccabi Petah Tikva. That has helped facilitate the signing of Cupido.
