According to Miguel Cardoso, the battle between Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns should have been played on Saturday rather than Sunday.

ORLANDO PIRATES VS MAMELODI SUNDOWNS

With the latest Bafana Bafana camp starting on Sunday, Sundowns coach Cardoso has said players will not be afforded enough rest. “It’s not good that this match was put on Sunday because the players will go to the national team immediately after the match,” Cardoso said via FARPost. “Players will not even have one day to rest, that’s why the match should have been played on Saturday so that the players can be respected in terms of how they have to rest and play at a good level for the national team.

“Football players are not machines; they are human beings that have families, social life and their physicality that should be respected. And sometimes we demand performance from players when they are dying, even when they are not capable of performing at the best level,” Cardoso concluded.

PLENTY TO PLAY FOR

Orlando Pirates host the mighty Mamelodi Sundowns at the FNB Stadium in Soweto on Sunday. Despite Mamelodi Sundowns’ 18-point lead, Tshegofatso Mabasa says it will not be a make-or-break event.

As things stand before kick-off on Sunday at 15:30, Sundowns will have only eight games left for the season, while the Sea Robbers have 12 games to the finish line. “I don’t think our title chances depend on this game against Sundowns,” Mabasa said via Sowetan. “We still have a lot of games to play, we still have a lot of points to fight for and anything is possible in football. But we know that on Sunday we have to go out there and fight.” The Orlando Pirates striker continued: “Hopefully, we get all three points, which would take us in the right direction if we want to win this league.

“We want more, we want success for this club, it’s a big brand and we have to keep on performing. There’s a lot of pressure from outside, but together as a group we believe we can achieve many more things this season.

“It [winning the league] would mean a lot, honestly. We’ve been creating history already with this wonderful club and that will remain in the history books. We have to leave a legacy, we have to leave our mark as the current players,” the striker concluded.
