Benni McCarthy hits back at Erik ten Hag & criticises Bafana Bafana
Ex-Manchester United coach and Bafana Bafana legend Benni McCarthy has recently thrown shade at two managers.
A prolific striker in his day, Benni McCarthy has been public about his thoughts of Erik ten Hag, saying he lacks the passion of a title-winning manager.
The Champions League winner had been Ten Hags’ assistant for several years at Manchester United, where he worked as the striking coach, teaching the likes of Marcus Rashford, Cristiano Ronaldo, and Romelu Lukaku.
“I can imagine how frustrating it is for Erik because he’s probably one of the hardest-working managers I’ve come across. His attention to detail, that man goes to sleep at 3am, 4am in the morning. The analysts get it at all angles, even if he thinks of something at 2am. I’m sure his wife must be on the verge of divorcing him because that’s his life. It’s non-stop. He works tirelessly and when you put that much work in, you expect things to go well, but that’s why I’m saying there’s something [that’s not right]”, McCarthy told SuperSport.
An underachieving Bafana Bafana
It’s no secret that the ex-Porto striker is available on the manager market, which is perhaps why he has become more vocal on teams and its personnel.
In a recent conversation On The Whistle Podcast, McCarthy gave his thoughts on Bafana Bafana’s from over the years, saying, “It’s a good generation of players, a lot of young players breaking through. So it was a massive opportunity for Bafana Bafana (to win the 2023 Afcon). They had a group of talented players coming through and they found themselves in a lucrative position to be in the semi-final,
“But there are a little bit of shortages, but you know you accept it because Bafana has been nowhere over the last few years. They have not qualified for any World Cups, they have underachieved quite a lot.
“So the fact that they have gone on to the Afcon semi-final is good. I think with the current squad, the current generation of players they have to choose from, they should be there and there about,” he added.
“I don’t know if they have the right manager, and if not, whichever right man comes in, hopefully, he can take this group of players to the next level.”
