United have started an internal investigation after criminal charges against Greenwood were dropped. The footballer was due to stand trial in November for alleged attempted rape, assault and controlling and coercive behaviour.

United will now speak to leadership groups from both the men’s and women’s senior squads. A number of individuals reportedly have concerns about welcoming the 21-year-old striker back to the club.

Greenwood has not played for United since January last year after an immediate suspension following arrest. Greenwood is under contract at Old Trafford until 2025 with the option of another year. He made his debut for the Red Devils in 2019 and has amassed 129 appearances for the Manchester giants.

According to ESPN sources, a decision is unlikely to be announced until the summer at the earliest with manager Erik Ten Hag insisting that there be no distractions during the second half of the season.
