Why was former Kaizer Chiefs star Blom omitted for Bafana?
According to Belgian boss Broos during a live SABC Sport interview, Njabulo Blom was left out because of a lack of match sharpness. MLS club St. Louis City haven’t played since early November and clearly, Broos felt it would be a risk to select the midfield dynamo on those grounds. It can then be inferred that Bongokuhle Hlongwane was left out for similar reasons.

BAFANA’S MATCHES AT AFCON 2023
South Africa kicks off their tournament against Mali on Tuesday, 16 January at 20:00. Hugo Broos’ charges then face Namibia on Sunday, 21 January at 20:00 and will wrap up the Group E action against Tunisia on Wednesday, 24 January at 17:00.
