Bafana Bafana needed a late goal to beat lowly-ranked South Sudan 3-2 in Juba on Tuesday afternoon.

South Sudan were first to score through Okello who converted from the penalty spot after Siyabonga Ngezana gave it away early on.

However, South Sudan’s excitement was short lived as Oswin Appollis equalised for Bafana in the 17th minute.

Appollis was again on target on the stroke of half-time to complete his brace and give the South Africans the lead.

Nonetheless, what was evident is how the 2023 Afcon bronze medalists wasted some clear-cut chances in the first half.

Hugo Broos’ men should have scored five goals before the break, and those missed chances came to haunt them in the second half.

South Sudan equalised in the 57th minute through Yuel, but the visitors were not to be deterred as the rallied.

Substitute Thalente Mbatha scored a late goal to win the match and collect all three points away from home.

The result means the South Africans are equal on four points with Uganda who beat Congo on Monday.

Broos made two changes to the previous starting line-up with Sipho Chaine and Thapelo Morena starting against South Sudan.

The duo came in for Veli Mothwa and Elias Mokwana as reported by The South African website.

Broos’ men will now shift focus to Congo in back-to-back clashes on 7 October (at home) and 15 October (away from home).
