There are many reasons why Morne Steyn will always hold a special place in the Springbok history books, having featured in 68 Tests over an illustrious career. His 52 starts at flyhalf also place him second on the all-time Springbok list in that position (only Handre Pollard is ahead of him on 61 starts at 10).

Steyn’s career began with the Bulls in Pretoria, where he honed his skills and contributed to their Super Rugby triumphs in 2007, 2009 and 2010. He later ventured to France, playing for Stade Français in the Top 14, where he also became an instrumental figure over a seven-year stint.

On the international stage, Steyn represented the Springboks with distinction, but there is no doubt that he will be most fondly remembered for his heroics against the British and Irish Lions.

In 2009, Steyn famously slotted an epic series-winning goal kick from around the halfway line as a fresh faced youngster.

His crowning moment then came in 2021, when he once again kicked the winning penalty against the Lions, echoing his heroics from 12 years prior after making an incredible comeback to the national side.

Steyn retired from international rugby in 2021 and then had one more stint at the Bulls before hanging up his boots, leaving behind a legacy of clutch performances and deadeye goal-kicking.

So what is former Springbok Morne Steyn doing now?

Despite Steyn’s deep-rooted connection with the Bulls, it was in fact their crosstown rivals, the Lions, who quite surprisingly announced that former Springbok and two-time British and Irish Lions series winner would be joining the team ahead of the 2023/24 United Rugby Championship.

Capped 68 times for Springboks and amassing over 700 test points, Steyn assumed the role as the Johannesburg team’s kicking consultant, working closely with the franchise’s goal kickers.

Steyn actually revealed that he wanted to stay at Loftus Versfeld, but ultimately suggested that coach Jake White didn’t want him involved with the senior team.

“I spoke to the Bulls and was supposed to start in August with the juniors, because the senior team do not want me as a kicking consultant or coach,” Steyn told the media. “And behind the scenes, I heard Jake didn’t want me there anymore. He had other plans.

“The Bulls haven’t had a kicking coach since [current France kicking coach] Vlok Cilliers left, so it is a new thing. Maybe in the next year or two, Jake will look at it, but at the moment I don’t think he wants a kicking consultant or coach there.

“[Bulls assistant coach] Chris Roussouw is at Loftus so he is doing a lot of the kicking game and is helping some of the guys.”

Meanwhile, when speaking on his appointment at the Lions, Steyn expressed his eagerness to join the franchise, and by all accounts he has made a great success of the role ever since.

“The Lions are a team with exciting talent and astute professionalism both from a players and coaching perspective, with the potential of achieving great things in the future.

“My aim is to make a difference to the team’s kicking strategy. The Lions are extremely fortunate to have great ball strikers; so I’m excited to work with them closely.”

Meanwhile, in the business world, the 40-year-old co-founded The Altitude Wealth Group, a multifaceted financial services company.
