FNB replaces MTN as Springboks’ new headline sponsor but what does It mean for South African(SA) Rugby.

SA Rugby has confirmed that FNB will replace MTN as the new headline sponsor of the Springboks, according to Sportwire. MTN, which renewed its contract in June 2021 for a five-year deal, will conclude its successful eight-year partnership with the reigning world champions this June.

MTN’s legacy and impact on South African Rugby

MTN played a pivotal role in South African rugby’s resurgence, backing the Springboks through a golden era that saw them win back-to-back Rugby World Cups in 2019 and 2023. The telecom giant also served as the principal partner for the highly anticipated British and Irish Lions Series in 2021, where the Boks secured a thrilling 2-1 series victory.

Reflecting on MTN’s impact, CEO Charles Molapisi said:

“This has been the most awe-inspiring and rewarding partnership for MTN after coming in as lead sponsors during a more difficult period for rugby in 2017 after the Boks had not fared as well after last winning the World Cup in 2007.”

Beyond branding, MTN played a transformative role in taking the game to grassroots communities, investing R30 million into rugby development, and elevating the sport’s national and global presence.

FNB steps up: A new era for the Springboks

As MTN steps away, FNB will take over as the official headline sponsor of the Springboks. The bank has been a partner of SA Rugby since 2017 and expanded its involvement in 2022 by becoming the principal sponsor of the Springbok Women’s team. This marked a historic milestone, as the women’s XVs program gained a major sponsorship for the first time since its relaunch in 2018.

While FNB’s logo has previously appeared on the back of the Springbok jerseys, it will now take center stage on the front, replacing MTN. This transition comes as the Springboks prepare for their 2024 season, kicking off in July.

What’s next for the Springboks under FNB?

The Springboks’ new season begins with back-to-back home test matches against Italy—first at Loftus Versfeld Stadium in Pretoria on 5 July, followed by a clash at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Port Elizabeth on 12 July. They will then face Georgia in Nelspruit on 19 July before defending their Rugby Championship title against New Zealand, Australia, and Argentina.

While FNB’s sponsorship raises speculation about Springbok matches being hosted at FNB Stadium, SA Rugby has indicated that no such plans exist for the near future. Scheduling conflicts with the domestic football calendar, particularly with Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates, have kept the Springboks away from the venue since 2013.

FNB’s commitment to South African rugby signals an exciting new chapter for the sport. The bank’s deep involvement in both men’s and women’s rugby, coupled with its focus on grassroots development, aligns with SA Rugby’s vision for long-term growth and transformation.

As SA Rugby moves forward with FNB as its main partner, the focus remains on continuing the Springboks’ global dominance while expanding opportunities for rugby’s future stars. With fresh backing and a winning culture in place, the Boks are set to embark on yet another thrilling chapter in their storied history.
