Proteas name new-look squad for upcoming ODIs
The Proteas have named six uncapped players in the squad for the upcoming ODI series against Pakistan and New Zealand.
The Proteas’ ‘tri-nation’ series, which will form part of the preparation for the ICC Champions Trophy is scheduled from 8-14 February in Lahore and Karachi.
Coach Rob Walter has named an initial 12-player squad for South Africa’s first match of the series against the Black Caps on 10 February at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore.
Players will be added to the squad following the SA20 Eliminator between Sunrisers Eastern Cape and Joburg Super Kings on Wednesday, 05 February.
ODI captain Temba Bavuma will lead the side, which includes six uncapped players in Warriors batter Matthew Breetzke, North West University Dragons batter Meeka-eel Prince, and his domestic teammate, fast bowler Gideon Peters, along with Dolphins fast bowler Eathan Bosch and Warriors spinner Senuran Muthusamy.
Western Province all-rounder Mihlali Mpongwana has also been named in the squad. This is the 24-year-old’s second call-up to the 50-over setup after being part of the ODI squad against India in 2023.
Fast bowler Gerald Coetzee has made a recovery from a left hamstring strain to further strengthen the attack.
The squad will travel to Lahore on Wednesday evening.
