Yep, South Africa’s sportspeople are at it again. Yesterday it was Wayde van Niekerk and Caster Semenya, today it’s Branden Grace.

Branden Grace made history by becoming the first person to shoot 62 at a men’s major

At The 2017 Open, the South African made history, going eight under par (for the day)to set a new golfing record. He holed eight birdies in the third round to beat the previous golfing best of  63 – recorded 31 times.

Now, if you’re not a golf fan, that might sound pretty complicated. But this summary from the BBC  should help you make some sense of what happened.

“No one has covered a major course in 62 shots before, it is an extraordinary moment for the game of golf.”

Grace’s caddie Zach Rasego says they had no idea they were going to create history with the first 62 in men’s major history until the last possible moment.

He told BBC Radio 5 live: “We had no idea until the last hole when Jason Dufner’s caddie said this putt is for history. A golf score is a golf score.”

Just let all of that sink in for a second.  The first ever 62 in the history of golf majors… belongs to a South African.

Jack Nicklaus didn’t do it. Arnold Palmer didn’t do it. Tiger Woods didn’t do it.

Nope. South African Branden Grace did it.

Here’s a short clip of that little moment of history…

And one more…

Grace’s best career performance in major so far is a third-place finish at the 2015 PGA Championship.

Conditions at The Open are incredibly favourable, so we could see yet another record.  At the time of writing, Grace was placed second overall.
