UN Reveals 'Credible and Reliable' Evidence of US Military Torture in Afghanistan

New report finds U.S.-backed Afghan government still committing widespread torture

    by Sarah Lazare, staff writer

The United Nations revealed Wednesday it has "credible and reliable" evidence that people recently detained at U.S. military prisons in Afghanistan have faced torture and abuse.

The UN's Assistance Mission and High Commissioner for Human Rights exposed the findings in a report based on interviews with 790 "conflict-related detainees" between February 2013 and December 2014.

According to the investigation, two detainees "provided sufficiently credible and reliable accounts of torture in a U.S. facility in Maydan Wardak in September 2013 and a U.S. Special Forces facility at Baghlan in April 2013."

The report states that the allegations of torture were investigated by "relevant authorities" but provided no information about the outcome of the alleged probes or the nature of the mistreatment.

This is not the first public disclosure of evidence of torture during the U.S. war in Afghanistan, now into its 14th year. The U.S. military's Bagram Prison, which was shuttered late last year, was notorious for torture, including beatings, sexual assault, and sleep deprivation, and further atrocities were confirmed in the Senate report (pdf) on CIA torture, released late last year in a partially-redacted form. Afghan residents have repeatedly spoken out against torture and abuse by U.S., international, and Afghan forces.

The Senate report on CIA torture, released late last year in a partially-redacted form, exposes U.S. torture at black sites in Afghanistan and around the world.

Moreover, residents of Afghanistan have testified to—and protested—torture by U.S., international, and Afghan forces.

Beyond U.S.-run facilities, the UN report finds that torture and abuse have slightly declined over recent years but remain "persistent" throughout detention centers run by the U.S.-backed Afghan government, including police, military, and intelligence officials. Of people detained for conflict-related reasons, 35 percent of them faced torture and abuse at the hands of their Afghan government captors, the report states.

According to the report, prevalent torture methods used by Afghan forces include, "prolonged and severe beating with cables, pipes, hoses or wooden sticks (including on the soles of the feet), punching, hitting and kicking all over the body including jumping on the detainee’s body, twisting of genitals including with a wrench-like device, and threats of execution and/or sexual assault."

New Study Reveals Obama’s Military Regularly Torturing People In Afghanistan – Including Children

Posted on February 27, 2015 by willyloman
    by Scott Creighton

“Using internationally accepted methodology, standards and best practices, UNAMA found sufficiently credible and reliable evidence that 278 of the 790 detainees interviewed (35 per cent ) – one in three detainees interviewed – had experienced torture or ill-treatment on arrest or in certain facilities of the NDS, ANP, ANA and ALP over the 23-month period. Of the 105 child detainees interviewed, 44 were subjected to torture or ill – treatment (42 per cent)UNAMA Study, page 17

I guess you can look at this as an improvement. The last study they did, released in 2013 but also covering a time-frame during which Obama was Commander in Chief, showed nearly half of the detainees were tortured by our puppet regime in Afghanistan with the help of our “advisers”. That number is down to a respectable 1 in 3. Now it seems we only torture half of the kids.

But they were doing it to protect our freedom, right? Well, if by “freedom” you mean “eliciting false confessions”, then yeah. Freedom.

When torture occurred, similar to UNAMA’s previous findings , it generally took the form of interrogation techniques in which NDS, ANP, ALP or ANA officials deliberately inflicted severe pain and suffering on detainees during interrogations aimed mainly at obtaining a confession or information. Such practices amounting to torture are among the most serious human rights violations and crimes – including war crimes and crimes against humanity – under international law” UNAMA Study, page 18

But hey, it’s a kinder gentler torture than that Dick Cheney used to engage in at Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq, right? Uh… not really:

“Sixteen different methods of torture were described by detainees. Torture was experienced in the form of prolonged and severe beating with cables, pipes, hoses or wooden sticks (including on the soles of the feet), punching, hitting and kicking all over the body including jumping on the detainee’s body, twisting of genitals including with a wrench – like device, and threats of execution and/or sexual assault . Other forms reported were suspension, electric shock, stress positions, forced prolonged standing including in extremely hot or cold conditions, forced standing and sitting down or squatting repeatedly, forced drinking of excessive amounts of water and denial of food, water and prayer time.

Several incidents of removal of finger and toenails and stuffing cloth or plastic bags in a detainee’s month, holding his nose and choking him causing the detainee to start to asphyxiate and also lose consciousness described as “water-boarding without the water” were reported. Detainees interviewed reported that different forms of torture were often used on them with increasing levels of pain particularly when they refused to confess to the crime they were accused of or failed to provide or confirm the requested or suggested information. Most detainees reported that torture stopped once they made a forced confession including sometimes in front of a video camera or when they thumb printed a paper that documented a confession” UNAMA Study, page 18

This new study involves former detainees who were held in custody during the period of Feb. 2013 through Dec. of 2014.

I don't believe in torture. Unless it is deserved.

I also don't believe in lies.

What do you think murderers and torturers (those that stone people, blind them, cut off their hands and heads, etc.) are going to say after they were "detained"?
"Oh, we were given ice cream and candy and allowed to watch Disney movies?"

Do I think that the United States should be torturing innocents, like Al-Quaeda did/does and ISIS continues to do? Of course not. But if I got someone in my hands that ordered the suicide bombing of an orphanage or an open market or someone that ordered or carried out a stoning or a beheading, I'd torture them to death myself.

i still have a plate in my skull due to a child with a gun in mosul
they wanted to kill someone that was putting out a fire at the time
and yes my first few years in the sand box i was a firefighter
they do not care and they will kill anyone that is not of their belief
they lie to make us seem more violent than we are and to make themselves look like innocents yet they hide the fact that they as muslims will take a per-pubecent boy and dress him as a girl and gang rape him and then kill him for being gay
but what do expect from the faith that brought you the fact that raping a woman is her fault and she should be killed

I'm with Ridge, till you've been shot at by a woman and stared down by a 12 year old kid who laughs at Americans dying, then you have no idea who they really are. Get off your pc, or your $400 phone, pick up a gun and helmet after boot camp (which you don't have the physical or mentally capacity to endure), and actually do something besides bitch about a country that is still great. In other words..the world is full of sayers and needs more DOERS.

I am a bit curious, what is the UN's definition of torture towards the ''conflict related detainees'' is it not allowing them access to a band-aid, or not allowing them to go outside of the detention center, and get fresh air.

    Just bit curious.

Well, lets be a bit more accurate here. The article said torture was occurring in Afghanistan et al. and was being committed by those countries troops. No indication US troops were involved. They may have stood by, or even held the torturers coat, but no indication they participated. And the article is full of tricky statements like ........... children being tortured or mistreated ............. meaning anything from anal probes to being sent to bed with no supper. Not very meaningful in the end.

On the whole, a pretty worthless revelation.

But of course, none of you cared about torture under Bush... Wouldn't be prudent!

Oh, i forgot, we're not supposed to mention Bush under any circumstance.

Let be accurate here...It says there is still torture going on at at our black sites by our puppet regime under our supervision with our advisors there. Any troops who "stood by or held coats" as in your situation is still guilty just like anyone standing by and/or holding the coat of a torturing child rapist would be any other time. Point is the torture is still going on under the obama regime theyve just out sourced the actual torture to foreign forces you can scream the plausible deniability line all you want that is why theyre doing it like this now..we didnt need this report it just confirms what we already knew the torture hasnt ended.
