Two minors facing murder after brutal attack of Sir Pierre learner

Police in Kempton Park have confirmed the arrest of two minors who were part of a mob that attacked and killed a Sir Pierre van Ryneveld High School learner last week.

TWO MINORS IN TROUBLE FOR ACT OF VIOLENCE

A shocking video emerged last week of a learner appearing unconscious after being allegedly beaten by learners from another school.

It later came to light that the victim of the assault was Neo Jithu Marele who sadly succumbed to his injuries.

Speaking to The Voice of Tembisa, Captain James Mtshali, the spokesperson for Kempton Park Police Station confirmed the arrest of the two minors.

“We can confirm that the investigating officers assigned to this case have managed to arrest two learners aged 16 and 17 who appeared before the Children’s court pending an outcome,” said Mtshali.

He also cautioned that this matter is being handled with sensitivity as the accused are minors.

GDE UNPACKS WHAT TRANSPIRED BETWEEN THE LEARNERS

Further elaborating on the scuffle, the Gauteng Department of Education said: “It is alleged that learners from the said school and Sunrise Combined College were involved in a fight which led to the deceased sustaining serious injuries on Wednesday, 07 September 2022. The Emergency Medical Services and the parents of the injured learner were immediately called and, he was stabilized and transferred to Thembisa hospital”.

Unfortunately, the said learner died on Thursday, 8 September at the hospital.

“Subsequently, our Psycho-Social Support team was dispatched to the school to provide the necessary support.”

GDE spokesperson Steve Mabona said, “We would like to convey our heartfelt condolences to the deceased’s families and the school’s community”.

“Accordingly, the school has launched an investigation and as such necessary disciplinary process will be facilitated,” he added.

A candlelight ceremony was held to remember the slain learner by his schoolmates and community members this week.

“We urge all our learners to refrain from acts of misconduct in schools and implore parents to assist the Department in instilling learner discipline in and outside the school environment, “Mabona advised.

The funeral of the late learner is reported to be taking place this weekend in Tembisa.
