Two arrested as Northern Cape police find sheep in boot of car on R31

Police arrested two men on Friday after they found a tied-up sheep in the boot of the car on the R31 road near Kimberley.

.Two men were arrested for stock theft after police found a tied-up sheep in the boot of their vehicle on the R31 road near Kimberley.

POLICE PULLED THE VEHICLE OVER IN THE EARLY HOURS OF FRIDAY

Police spokesperson Captain Olebogeng Tawana said Delportshoop police received a tip-off.

“Delportshoop police received a tip-off regarding a silver-grey Toyota Tazz, driving from Postmasburg on the R31 road in the direction of Kimberley, loaded with possible stolen livestock.

“Police acted promptly to the alert, and the alleged Toyota Tazz was spotted on the R31 near Delportshoop.”

Tawana said the vehicle was pulled over and searched.

“During the search, police found one sheep with its feet tied loaded in the boot of the vehicle.

“The suspects failed to give a satisfactory explanation as to who the rightful owner was. The Kimberley Stock Theft and Endangered Species Unit is investigating to determine the ownership since the suspects failed to prove ownership.”

The two men are expected to appear in the Barkly West Magistrates’ Court on Monday, 04 October 2021.

“The South African Police Service continues to encourage livestock owners to tattoo and brand mark their livestock, because brand marked and tattooed livestock can be easily identified when stolen or lost.”

The Frances Baard District Commissioner, Major General Johan Bean commended Delportshoop police officers for their prompt response to the tip-off, which led to the arrest of the suspects.
