Tshwane metro police officer arrested and linked to business robbery
Scores of cash were found in different parts of the Tshwane cop’s house. His salary definitely would not explain the origins of the money.
On Wednesday, around 11:00, the police carried out an arrest on a 39-year-old Tshwane Metro Police Department (TMPD) officer and a 34-year-old woman in Atteridgeville.
The sergeant is suspected to be linked to a business robbery that occurred last week in Akasia, north of Pretoria.
On Monday, Captain Mavela Masondo stated that police decided to act on information they received, concerning the Akasia robbery, by descending upon a house.
Information linking Tshwane cop to Akasia robbery
According to details given by Masondo, after the robbery, the perpetrators made their getaway in a yellow Audi S3, driving in direction of Atteridgeville.
“Police followed up information which led them to a house in Atteridgeville. Inside the house, a woman was found in possession of [an] undisclosed amount of cash that she could not account for and she was arrested,” Masondo claimed.
Although Masondo could not divulge details on the amount of the recovered money, there were, all allegedly, various sums of undisclosed amounts of money found in a number of other rooms in the house. It is suspected that the money was divided between the robbers before parting ways.
He shared that even more cash was discovered in an unregistered white Volkswagen Jetta that was parked in the yard. A yellow Audi S3 that seemingly matched the alleged getaway vehicle, was also found in the yard, revealed Masondo.
Authorities ashamed of colleague’s actions
A “preliminary investigation” revealed that the vehicle was allegedly owned by the traffic officer.
Superintend Isaac Mahamba, spokesperson for the TMPD, confirmed the officer’s arrest and shared that they would fully cooperate with police and the investigation.
Mahamba said:
“We are saddened about this arrest, remember we are tasked to uphold the law, but if one of our own is implicated in such [acts], we are worried about that. We want the law to take its course and we will investigate it fully internally.”
Details surrounding the arrested suspects’ court appearances are still unknown.
