Smash-and-grab crimes are escalating across South Africa, leaving motorists in major cities like Johannesburg and Cape Town on edge.

As reported in Business Tech, these opportunistic crimes mainly occur at traffic lights or in heavy traffic when vehicles are stationary, making drivers easy targets.

Holiday Season Brings Greater Risk

As the holiday season approaches, traffic increases, and so do smash-and-grab crimes. Criminals take advantage of distracted drivers and visible valuables, with incidents rising sharply in recent months. Cape Town alone reported 42 incidents by September 2024, a significant jump from just seven in April.

High-Risk Areas Identified

Intersections along busy roads like Jakes Gerwel Drive in Cape Town have become hotspots. This route connects areas like Mitchells Plain and Acacia Park, making it a prime location for criminals.

Similarly, Johannesburg faces a surge in smash-and-grab crimes, especially in high-traffic zones.

Johannesburg has experienced a sharp increase in these incidents, particularly along Grayston Drive in Sandton. Road closures and traffic from events like the Red Bull F1 Showrun in September created opportunities for criminals to target vehicles in bumper-to-bumper traffic.

Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) spokesperson Xolani Fihla has highlighted the seriousness of these crimes and the ongoing efforts to address them.

Criminals Exploit Driver Distraction

Alderman JP Smith, Cape Town’s safety and security head, highlights how distracted drivers make easy targets. Many victims focus on their phones or other belongings instead of their surroundings. Criminals seize these moments to smash car windows and grab valuables.

Law enforcement urges drivers to adopt basic safety measures. Keep doors locked and windows up, even when stopping briefly. Store valuables out of sight, preferably in the trunk. Avoid distractions like texting, talking on the phone, or eating while driving.

Increased Risk During Festive Shopping

The festive season heightens the risk of smash-and-grab crimes. Shoppers often leave bags and electronics in plain sight, drawing criminals to their vehicles. Parking lots near malls are particularly vulnerable, especially during peak shopping hours.

Efforts to Combat Smash-and-Grab Crimes

Authorities in Johannesburg and Cape Town are ramping up efforts to combat these crimes. Increased police patrols monitor high-risk roads like the N2 and Jakes Gerwel Drive. Surveillance cameras are also being deployed in key areas.

Despite these measures, limited resources hinder law enforcement’s ability to cover all crime hotspots. The unpredictable nature of smash-and-grab crimes further complicates prevention efforts.

Public Awareness Campaigns

Authorities are running awareness campaigns to educate drivers. Tips on reducing risks are shared regularly, emphasizing the importance of vigilance. Law enforcement stresses that driver awareness is the most effective deterrent.

Tips to Safeguard Against Smash-and-Grab Crimes

To address the surge in smash-and-grab crimes, anti-crime activist Yusuf Abramjee shares key precautions for motorists:

  • Awareness of Hotspots: Stay informed about areas in your community where these crimes are common. Use local CPF forums and community channels to identify hotspots and exercise extra caution when passing through them.
  • Valuables Placement: Keep valuables out of sight by locking them securely in the boot rather than leaving them on seats.
  • Mobile Phone Security: Conceal your mobile phone and avoid talking on it while driving to reduce the risk of being targeted.
  • Windows and Intersections: Always keep windows closed and remain vigilant at intersections, as criminals strike quickly and unexpectedly.

Stay Alert to Stay Safe

To avoid becoming a victim of smash-and-grab crimes, drivers must stay alert and prepared. With proactive measures, motorists can reduce their vulnerability and enjoy a safer driving experience.
