Numerous residents had to be evacuated after a tornado in Pretoria left several buildings damaged.

The City of Tshwane Emergency Services Department released a statement on 18 February 2025 detailing the effects of the storm. The tornado is said to have hit Montana in Pretoria North.

TORNADO IN PRETORIA CAUSES SIGNIFICANT DAMAGE

The tornado in Pretoria was reported to the Emergency Communication Centre (ECC) on Tuesday evening. Firefighters and officials from Disaster Risk Management Section were deployed. Various properties including buildings and vehicles were left damaged.

“Upon arrival, the firefighters found out that there was a significant damage caused by the storm which uprooted some trees and blew away the corrugated iron roof sheets of the buildings, carports and other structures in the area along the Sefako Makgatho Drive,” the statement explained.

TORNADO IN PRETORIA LEADS TO EVACUATONS

The department further stated in their statement that residents had to be evacuated from buildings severely damaged by the tornado in Pretoria.

“The residential complex in Veda Street near Enkeldoorn Street was badly affected as several of the buildings within the complex suffered major damage, especially on the upper floors and the roofs.

“External geysers and corrugated iron roof sheets were brought to the ground by the strong wind, leaving the structures of the units exposed to the falling rain,” it read.

Due to the exposure to the heavy rains, major damage was caused to the upper floors of the residential unit forcing evacuations.

“The residents had to be evacuated and sheltered temporarily in the neighbouring units. Disaster Management officials are on scene doing assessment of the damage and how they further can assist the affected families.”

Thankfully, no one has been reported injured. The department also revealed that incidents of flooding were reported in Mabopane, Pretoria North.
