When a Justice Minister is linked to a corruption scandal, it raises serious concerns for all South Africans. Thembi Simelane, who served as mayor of Polokwane before becoming Minister of Justice, is currently facing questions about her involvement in the VBS Mutual Bank scandal—a case that affected many vulnerable citizens.

As reported by IOL, Simelane’s alleged connection to the VBS looting involves a loan of R575,600 she reportedly received from Gundo Wealth Solutions, a company tied to the scandal. This loan, allegedly used to purchase a coffee shop in Sandton, has led to growing concerns about transparency and accountability. According to IOL, key organisations and political parties such as ActionSA and the DA have called for her immediate resignation, with others calling for her arrest

What Are the Allegations?

The focus on Simelane comes from her association with Gundo Wealth Solutions, a company implicated in the unlawful investments of Polokwane Municipality funds into VBS Mutual Bank. While Simelane has maintained that the transaction was above board, questions remain about the nature of the loan and the potential conflict of interest.

As reported by EWN, Simelane’s position as Minister of Justice, with oversight of key institutions like the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), has placed additional scrutiny on her suitability to occupy this office.

Public Reaction and Calls for Accountability

Though Simelane denies any wrongdoing, public concern has reached a boiling point. The VBS scandal had a devastating impact on many South Africans, particularly in rural areas, where people lost significant savings. As the Minister responsible for upholding the law, Simelane is arguably and understandably held to higher standards of transparency and accountability. Political parties and civil society groups have urged her to address the matter publicly and provide clarity on her role.

Today, Simelane is expected to appear before Parliament’s Portfolio Committee on Justice and Constitutional Development to address any wrongdoing and respond to the allegations of fraud, corruption and money laundering.

What’s Next for the Justice System?

Simelane’s role in the justice system is now under close watch. As the Minister overseeing critical bodies such as the NPA, her involvement in this case has raised important questions about the impartiality of investigations. Some have voiced concerns about whether the public can trust the justice system to act fairly in this matter.

Simelane’s appearance before Parliament’s Portfolio Committee on Justice and Constitutional Development, will be a crucial step in determining the way forward.

DO YOU THINK JUSTICE MINISTER THEMBI SIMELANE SHOULD STEP DOWN WHILE UNDER INVESTIGATION FOR HER ROLE IN THE VBS LOOTING SCANDAL?
