The African National Congress (ANC) says there is nothing common between itself and breakaway parties, the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) and uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party.

Acting spokesperson Zuko Godlimpi revealed this during a briefing in Boksburg, where the party’s National Executive Committee held a three-day meeting and a Lekgotla.

ANC LASHES OUT EFF AND MK PARTY

As previously reported, support for the ANC plunged to 40% in the 29 May polls. As a result, the party formed a Government of National Unity (GNU) with ten other parties, including the Democratic Alliance (DA) and Freedom Front Plus.

It was implausible that the ANC would form a coalition with the EFF and MK Party as the parties would have had a majority in Parliament when considering the number of seats they each have. Additionally, it would have made making decisions easier. However, this was not the case.

During the briefing at the Birchwood Hotel, Godlimpi said when the ANC lost power in metro municipalities in 2016, the EFF’s condition for forming a government was that the ANC should remove Jacob Zuma as president.

“So, this Ramaphosa removal thing is not new; it’s not some innovative thing, the EFF started it, and we told them to go jump,” he said.

“The ANC is an idea, and anything that departs from the idea of the ANC is not the ANC and is not ideologically similar to the ANC,” he emphasised.
